ZNet |Electoral Politics | 2004 Elections by Noam Chomsky

"2004 Elections - by Noam Chomsky November 29, 2004
The elections of November 2004 have received a great deal of discussion, with exultation in some quarters, despair in others, and general lamentation about a 'divided nation.' They are likely to have policy consequences, particularly harmful to the public in the domestic arena, and to the world with regard to the 'transformation of the military,' which has led some prominent strategic analysts to warn of 'ultimate doom' and to hope that US militarism and aggressiveness will be countered by a coalition of peace-loving states, led by China! (John Steinbruner and Nancy Gallagher, Daedalus). We have come to a pretty pass when such words are expressed in the most respectable and sober journals. It is also worth noting how deep is the despair of the authors over the state of American democracy. Whether or not the assessment is merited is for activists to determine."

NASA - Get Ready for the Largest Demolition Derby on the Planet
Scientists say Slow-Motion Collision Near Antarctic Research Station Imminent

"It is an event so large that the best seat in the house is in space: a massive iceberg is on a collision course with a floating glacier near the McMurdo Research Station in Antarctica. NASA satellites have witnessed the 100-mile-long B-15A iceberg moving steadily towards the Drygalski Ice Tongue. Though the iceberg's pace has slowed in recent days, NASA scientists expect a collision to occur no later than January 15, 2005."

Lightning Struck Itself

"OH MY GOD IT'S YOU!!
Yesterday afternoon in Bourke St Mall I was out and about with my lovely friend Leia; I was wearing white short-shorts, a brown singlet, flat sandals, a big, blue floppy straw hat and my mega Jacqueline Susann sunnies. Two girls passed in front of us and one of them put her hand over her mouth and started squealing 'oh my God!' Her pal quickly pulled her away, shooshing her; turns out she thought I was... Sienna Miller!"

The Woolamaloo Gazette

" Shortly before Christmas, in the spirit of that season, my manager at Waterstones asked me to come into the office. Within a few, short moments I was told that for comments I had posted on this web site I was now subject to an enquiry to determine if I should face a disciplinary hearing for gross misconduct because I had brought the company into disrepute. I was informed (more than once) that this could cause my dismissal. I was suspended on pay and escorted from the premises of the bookstore I had worked in for eleven years.
Because of the holidays the disciplinary hearing was not held until yesterday, Wednesday 5th. I could not really talk about it here while the process was ongoing I am now free to discuss what happened for the brutally simple reason that Waterstones dismissed me from my job yesterday."

Many-to-Many: folksonomies controlled vocabularies

", and speculation about what might happen if they are paired with controlled vocabularies.

its easy to say that the social networkers have figured out what the librarians havent: a way to make metadata work in widely distributed and heretofore disconnected content collections.

Easy, but wrong: folksonomies are clearly compelling, supporting a serendipitous form of browsing that can be quite useful. But they dont support searching and other types of browsing nearly as well as tags from controlled vocabularies applied by professionals. Folksonomies arent likely to organically arrive at preferred terms for concepts, or even evolve synonymous clusters. Theyre highly unlikely to develop beyond flat lists and accrue the broader and narrower term relationships that we see in thesauri."

Ross Mayfield's Weblog: Estonia: If It Works, You Can Break It

"Fantastic story on entrepreneurship and technology in Estonia in Forbes by Joshua Levine. 'If the Internet was reborn as a country, it would be Estonia,' said a UNDP administrator. This quote from Linnar Viik sums it up nicely: 'People like to say, don't touch things that work, but Estonians like to look behind the thing and wonder whether there's anything we can change about it. In Estonia you might say, if it works, you can break it.'"

Flickr: Forums: FlickrIdeas: Idea for photo sharing with non account holding friends/family

"As you can tell, I feel strongly about this, having used a Flickr pro account for some months now.
1. There are many friends and family I will not subject to my creating an account for them without their prior permission. They find it an offensive invasion and I was embarrassed the first time I unwittingly did this. (Sub point, change the wording on the Flickr bit of an invite so my friends are not presented with a fait accompli)
2. The current process of creating a group is aweful for those of us with more to do than play with our computers, ie with any sort of life. Copying three email addresses at a time, three words at a time from my email address book, is unnecessarily tedious. I dont have the time to do it nearly as much as I wish to share photos. I am much more likely to introduce friends to lovely Flickr if I can send an URL and password of a private set to an existing email address book group, of eg twenty who attended a function.
3. I will not make public photos of many people, especially in a set and some of them just don't want an existing account so an URL to a public set is not good enough.
4. Having to sign them up again for a new group each time I publish photos for a unique event is redundant rude and inefficient.

I know that an url and password enabling access to a specific private set would suit me and the communities I serve very well.
"
